WPS Announces 2011 Schedule

The WPS has released the complete 2011 schedule and it includes 17 nationally televised matches on Fox Soccer. The weekly televised matches will be carried under the banner of "WPS Sunday on Fox Soccer." This marks the third year that Fox Soccer has covered WPS.

“We are thrilled to embark on a third year of our exclusive broadcast relationship with WPS,” said David Nathanson, General Manager of FOX Soccer. “We are proud to showcase the world’s greatest female players, particularly in a FIFA Women’s World Cup year.”

The regular season will open on the weekend of April 9-10 with two matches and continue through August 14, taking a two week break that coincides with the beginning of the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. Each team will play 18 games, with nine at home and nine on the road. The complete schedule can be found at http://www.womensprosoccer.com/.

The Western New York Flash, with Marta, will have the most television appearances with eight, followed by Philadephia and Boston with seven. The magicJack's Washington Freedom franchise will only appear twice, probably due in large part to the uncertainty of their home venue for specific games. The team will play most of their matches at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, but may play some matches in the Washington DC area.

Because there are an even number of teams and a shorter schedule, there will be fewer midweek matches this season. The season culminates in the WPS Championship presented by Citi which will be played on the weekend of August 27-28.

“This will be a great year to celebrate women’s soccer,” said WPS CEO Anne-Marie Eileraas. “WPS teams continue to bring the world’s best players to America for our fans to enjoy week-in-week-out. The World Cup will introduce new fans to women’s soccer and provide more exposure to the terrific stars and teams in our league.”
