WPS Midweek Notes - June 16

Marta Named Player of the Week

It's no surprise that Marta was named WPS Player of the Week after scoring two goals and assisting on a third in FC Gold Pride's 3-1 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday. It is the 4th time Marta has received the honor, the second time this season.

Marta assisted on Gold Pride's first goal, intercepting a pass near midfield and sending a perfectly weighted through ball to Christine Sinclair who made it 1-0. Later, Marta got one of her own, outracing Holmfridur Magnusdottir for the ball and sending it through Karina LeBlanc's legs from close range to give Gold Pride a 2-0 lead.

Finally, after Philadelphia had closed the gap to one goal, Marta scored her second of the match. This time she raced past Nikki Krzysik to go one-on-one with LeBlanc. After LeBlanc had slid out, Marta was able to keep her feet on a great effort and slammed it home.

Marta now leads WPS with 6 goals this season and 16 goals in her WPS career.

Their oldest player is Hope Solo who is just 28…..As Eniola Aluko joined the Beat, she had twice as many goals this season as the entire Atlanta team…..The Beat will host the first midweek game of the WPS season against Philadelphia on June 23.

They have been outscored by a 13-7 margin over that time.

Sky Blue FCRosana’s penalty kick goal against Boston was not only the first converted by a Sky Blue player, but also the first ever attempted by SBFC…..Kendall Fletcher saw her first action with Sky Blue as a 2nd half substitution in Sunday’s match…..Since making the playoffs in 2009, Sky Blue has become an impressive road team, sweeping three matches in last year’s playoffs and going 3-2-1 in six road games this season.

Washington Freedom – The Freedom extended their unbeaten streak to six with Saturday’s tie, a franchise record…..Homare Sawa is the only WPS player with three or more goals that did not make the WPS All-Star game…..Sonia Bompastor recorded her 10th career assist on Sawa’s goal on Saturday.
