2011 World Cup: Sorting Out the Scenarios

Six of the eight quarterfinalists have already been decided for the 2011 World Cup. Germany, France, Japan, the United States, Sweden, and Brazil have all secured their berth in the final eight. Two more berths are yet to be decided, one in Group B and one in Group D, plus first or second placement within the group has yet to be decided in all groups. Canada, Nigeria, New Zealand, Korea DPR, Colombia, and Equatorial Guinea have been eliminated from any chance to continue into the next stage.

That means there will be two more teams to be decided. On Tuesday, England or Mexico will secure one of those spots in Group B and on Wednesday, Australia will battle Norway for the other spot in Group D.

The quarterfinals are matched up as follows:
Group A 1st place vs. Group B 2nd place.
Group A 2nd place vs. Group B 1st place.
Group C 1st place vs. Group D 2nd place.
Group C 2nd place vs. Group D 1st place.

Here are the scenarios for placement in each group:

Group A
Matches: Germany vs. France; Canada vs. Nigeria.
Germany and France have qualified.

If France wins or draws, they win Group A and Germany finishes 2nd.
If Germany wins, they win Group A and France finishes 2nd.

Group B
Matches: England vs. Japan; Mexico vs. New Zealand.
Japan has qualified.

If England wins, then they win Group B and Japan finishes 2nd.
If China and England tie, then China wins Group B and England finishes 2nd.
If China wins and New Zealand wins or draws against Mexico, then China wins Group B and England finishes 2nd.
If China wins and Mexico wins, China wins Group B and the second quarterfinal berth would come down to goal differential between England and Mexico. Going into Tuesday's action, England is +1 and Mexico is (-4).

Group C
Matches: United States vs. Sweden; Korea DPR vs. Colombia.
The United States and Sweden have qualified.

If the United States wins or draws, they win Group C and Sweden finishes 2nd.
If Sweden wins, they win Group C and the United States finishes 2nd.

Group D
Matches: Brazil vs. Equatorial Guinea; Australia vs. Norway.
Brazil has qualified.

If Brazil wins or ties they will win Group D. 2nd place would be decided between Australia and Norway with a draw meaning that Australia would secure 2nd place.
If Brazil loses and the other match ends in a draw, Brazil wins Group D and Australia finishes 2nd.
If Brazil loses and Australia wins, both would qualify and goal differential would decide who finishes 1st or 2nd. Going into Wednesday's action, Brazil is +4 and Australia is even.
If Brazil loses and Norway wins, both would qualify and goal differential would decide who finishes 1st or 2nd. Going into Wednesday's action, Brazil is +4 and Norway is (-2).
