WPS Teams Make Final Cuts, Release Rosters

WPS teams have made the final cuts necessary to get down to the 24-player roster limit by March 31. Many of the teams do not have as many as 24 players listed, leaving room for a free agent pickup. Three of the teams were already under limit well before the final date arrived. There were not any huge surprises.

Out of the 24 selections in the January, 2011 draft, 11 were cut, with three being picked up by other teams. The highest of those was Portland outside back Elli Reed, who was drafted by Western New York, but was quickly picked up by the Boston Breakers upon her release.

All eight first round selections made WPS rosters, while only one second round pick survived, Omolyn Davis with magicJack. The only two fourth round selections to have made a roster are goalkeepers Ashleigh Bowers with Western New York and Katie Fraine, who was released by magicJack, but then signed by Atlanta.

Atlanta leads the way with nine rookies (players who played college soccer in 2010) out of the 22 players listed on their roster. That is by far the most of any team, with the next closest being magicJack with five. Boston and Western New York only have two apiece.

The regular season begins on April 9, with Boston traveling to Atlanta. Sky Blue will host Philadelphia the following day, with magicJack and Western New York playing their first game the following weekend.
