US, Costa Rica, Canada, and Mexico Advance to Concacaf Semifinals

The USWNT has advanced to the Concacaf WC Qualifying Semifinals. They will be joined by Costa Rica, Canada, and Mexico. All four teams swept their first two contests in group qualifying.

The only thing left to be decided is exactly what the pairings will be. The US will play Costa Rica in the final Group B qualifier on Monday to determine who will win the group and who will finish second. Should there be a tie, the US would win the group based on goal differential. They easily disposed of Haiti 5-0 and Guatemala 9-0. Costa Rica edged Guatemala 1-0, before defeating Haiti 3-0.

In Group A action, Canada will face Mexico on Tuesday to determine first and second placements from that group. Canada slipped past Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 and had no trouble in winning an 8-0 decision over Guyana. Mexico defeated Guyana 7-2 and Trinidad & Tobago by a 2-0 score on Sunday evening.

The top two teams out of the Concacaf region will automatically qualify for the 2011 World Cup to be held in Germany. The third place finisher in the Concacaf region will face Italy for another berth in the 2011 World Cup.
