Icelandic volcano postpones UEFA semifinal

The eruption of the volcano in Iceland has disrupted air traffic throughout northern Europe, and has affected games in the UEFA Women's Champions League and Damallsvenskan. Umeå IK was slated to host their second semifinal against French side Olympique Lyonnais this afternoon, and, according Britta Åkerlund's report at UIK's website, UEFA was quite keen to see that the match was played today no matter what. An Icelandic UEFA delegate was replaced by one from Åland who could take the boat and train up to Umeå, and the Romanian and English referees were replaced by Norwegian and Finnish squads who were preparing to drive. All the scrambling made for a couple of very busy days for the Umeå support staff, which in the end was all for nought, as the final word came down from UEFA sometime yesterday morning that the match would be postponed. UIK reports that the last day for holding the rescheduled match is 29 April.

The affected Damallsvenskan match, in which Sunnanå (in Skellefteå) was to host Koppabergs/Göteborg, has been rescheduled for 28 April.
