WPS Finalizes All-Star Roster

The WPS has announced its roster for the August 30th All-Star Game. Eleven players were chosen based on voting by fans, media, coaches, and players. Out of those 11, five of the players will be playing in Europe that weekend, so they will be honored as being part of the first XI, but had to be replaced by those who finished next highest in the voting. The European players that were voted in are Alex Scott, Kelly Smith, Camille Abily, Sonia Bompastor, and Eniola Aluko.

The first XI after replacing missing players (***denotes replacement)

G-Karina LeBlanc (Los Angeles)
D-Amy LePeilbet (Boston)
D-Tina Ellertson (Saint Louis)
D-Christie Rampone (Sky Blue) ***
M-Lori Chalupny (Saint Louis)
M-Shannon Boxx (Los Angeles)
M-Aya Miyama (Los Angeles) ***
M-Formiga (Gold Pride) ***
M-Megan Rapinoe (Chicago) ***
F-Marta (Los Angeles)
F-Cristiane (Chicago) ***

An additional 7 players were named to the roster by selection of Commissioner Antonucci and Head Coach Abner Rogers.

G-Hope Solo (Saint Louis)
D-Cat Whitehill (Washington)
M-Brittany Klein (Chicago)
M-Heather O'Reilly (Sky Blue)
M/F-Kristine Lilly (Boston)
F-Abby Wambach (Washington)
F-Christine Sinclair (Gold Pride)

Los Angeles will have 4 players on the roster, all starters. Saint Louis and Chicago will have 3, and Washington, Gold Pride, Sky Blue, and Boston end up with 2.

It will be interesting to see how Abner Rogers lines up this team, because based on league play, he really has no outside defenders. Tina Ellertson did play outside early in the season and Lori Chalupny plays outside back on the USWNT.

Congratulations to all of those who made the team!
